DevOps Engineer/Linux System Administrator, £35,000 - £42,000

A world-renowned arts institution based in South Kensington is looking for a DevOps/ Linux System Administrator specialist to join an IT department of circa 20 staff and a team of 8.

The role will be primarily responsible for deployment of all code into the estate of Linux-based systems. You will collaborate with both internal and external software developers and with the Infrastructure team to manage code release, service and system deployment of hosted and third-party hosted environments.

Main tasks

  • Learn about new technologies and tools to introduce to the business to grow the agile development environment
  • Provide direct server support during both deployment and general production
  • Create custom scripts and tools to manage code deployment, test management and operational monitor of all solutions
  • Automate the deployment of Linux-based applications, system configuration and security settings
  • Prioritise requests from development, operations and product teams with empathy and understanding of business needs while adhering to all change procedures
  • Liaise with technical support departments, both internally and externally, to implement services and troubleshoot issues
  • Ensure effective communication is in place with developers and stakeholders alike
  • Understand and comply with the IT organisation requirements, processes, procedures and policies

Essential requirements

  • Strong background in Linux/Unix administration
  • Demonstrable skills in a range of DevOps tools including tools such as Puppet, Jenkins, Docker, Kubernetes, Chef and Ansible
  • Ability to use a range of code and scripting technologies (PHP, Python, Perl, Ruby, Bash shell)
  • Experience with containers, virtualisation and cloud technologies
  • Familiarity with source code control solutions
  • Demonstrable experience using continuous integration tools
  • Experience with virtualisation technologies and the IT operations processes surrounding them
  • Process re-engineering
  • Communicating and collaborating with others
  • Project management mindset with robust skills in Agile and Kanban methodologies
  • Ability to demonstrate initiative and innovation and to complete projects effectively
  • Good communication skills including an ability to explain concepts, ideas and technologies in a clear and understandable manner to technical and non-technical colleagues and project stakeholders
  • Ability to produce clear written material
  • Strong analysis and decision-making skills
  • Excellent planning and organisation skills
  • Experience of operating with a high level of autonomy and the ability to manage others to ensure delivery to agreed timescales
  • Open to new ideas and change initiatives, with an ability to modify the current approach in the face of new demands


  • Knowledge of Cyber Essentials and GDPR
  • Working knowledge of ITIL processes
  • Experience implementing DevOps within a traditional operations environment
  • Experience implementing Elasticsearch
  • Working with AWS environments
